Bit of a scare
My son Matt got jumped by a couple of lads who beat him around the head with a baseball bat last night. They'd already punched him up at the bus stop before driving to a bridge near our house and laying in wait for him to arrive and walk home. That is malicious, nay planned and evil. What is worse is that they had been out with him all evening on good terms, with some slight falling out over a girl between Matt's friend and the lads. After the attack he staggered home and banged us up terrified with a bleeding cut on the head and various bruises from the bat all over. We called the police and got him to hospital and he is physically fine but very traumatised from the threats they made to him and us if he went to the police.

Long story short, today Matt gave a statement to the police, they were very good and helpful and addressed his fears. They has already arrested one of the lads and this afternoon he confessed to the attack but not to using a weapon. When the other lad comes back from work and is arrested then they'll be released on police bail which will restrict where they can go relative to Matt and our house. They'll probably be charged with actual bodily harm with intent or possibly grievous bodily harm with intent. Of course you can't be sure, it isn't always as simple as that and there is a long way to go, but since he's confessed then I can't see it not ending in court.

My concern is that my son is safe, and that this doesn't traumatise him too much and/or affect his A-level exams.. next one Friday. I do want the lads punished and also taught a lesson so they don't do that again. A premeditated ambush with a weapon aiming most blows at the head is well beyond some laddish rough stuff, it is plain wrong.

How do I feel? Very strangely calm.

I am very sorry about this. I struggle to understand how and why anyone would do this in such a premeditated way to anyone. It is vile and evil.

Please pass on my very best wishes to Matt, and love to you all.

Really sorry to hear this. Please give Matt our best regards.

HOLY FUCK TOM!!

(pardon my French)

Hope Matt is alight now in the short term, and gets over this as quickly as possible in the long term. Please pass on my best wishes.

Terribly sorry to hear that Tom. I hope Matt recovers quickly and you can all put this hideous episode behind you.

Blessed be,

Sacha

Well it's Wednesday and now I have reached the 'sodding angry' stage.

This is shocking news.

I hope that Matt is okay and the police charge those responsible.

My best wishes to you and Matt.

The main culprit confessed. Then the lesser culprit (who stood by) lied and denied it all. Since the first one had already placed him at the scene then he also is likely to get charged due to his refusing to admit he was there.

They'll be out on bail later today. Conditions include not going near Matt or us or communicating with us.

BTW the two are brothers.. I have to say I pity their parents right now. I don't know them persoanlly but they live close and those who know them say they are very nice people and can't understand why their kids have done this.

*nods* Calm does make sense. Hopefully some of it will rub off on Matt.

Given the statement to the police was the best and wisest action.

I am sure the threats of further violence if he went to the police will add to the extremely serious convictions these scum are about to face.
tzunder[info]tzunder on May 21st, 2008 11:46 am (UTC)
I wish they were scum. The main culprit has always been trouble but only in the way some kids are. He bullied Matt on the bus when they were 13-14, and he has a reputation for fighting and generally still being a bully, but he comes from a nice family, there is no reason for this appalling behaviour.

But I don't care. This is bad stuff and he needs punishing for his sake and ours. Hopefully he'll learn his lesson and not do this again to anyone.

My heart goes out to you and yours.
I hope they throw the book at those guys.

My sympathies. Deal with a sudden and inexplicable act of violence is never easy.

Hope your son recovers soon and that the incident is well and over.

All the best
First things first, obviously you and importantly little Zunder have my sympathies. I hope it all get sorted and he's okay.

Getting all cold and clinical about it... Probably the last thing on your mind but have you got photos of Matt's injuries? I'm presuming so given police involvement - but just in case of the vagaries of the CPS mean a criminal prosecution doesn't happen, there are civil proceedings to consider. I'd document everything.

As a general lifestyle choice, I know its not for everyone, but I'd recommend some kind of self defence training for any young man, especially given the current hoodies-on-street corners climate in which we live. Matt won't be wanting to think about that any time in the near future I would think, but maybe after summer, a bit of training at a gym or some classes can provide that bit of an edge in self preservation.

Most importantly I hope you are all okay and can get to a happy emotional place ASAP. My thoughts are with you.

Re: All the best
Thanks Gaz.

We have documented it all. Got pictures, copies of doctors' reports etc.

Matt does want to do some self defence, and we checked one out in Sheffield on Weds. No fancy belts or Nipponese stuff, just street fighting.

He can't start for 2-3 weeks, what with having had a head injury, but I think it's a good idea if only for self confidence.

I feel emotionally all over the place today.

As for 'little Zunder', he's my height now and I expect to cap me in a few months, and I'm 6'2".

Re: All the best

Word.

My personal preference is Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) for all sorts of reasons you don't want to hear about. Wicker have got a reasonably good rep depending on how serious he wants to get about it, and are in Sheffield.

There's lots of other choices out there though. When he's mended and up for it, he can always have a bit of a shop around and find a club he's comfortable with.

For fitness, overall confidence and getting motivation and discipline its all good. It'll be relatively easy for a whipper snapper like him. When you get to my age just getting out of bed is a struggle... (although I think Anne hinted that the same criticism could be levelled at teenagers too!)

I agree with Gaz, some rudimentary self-defence training is invaluable in today's increasingly hostile environment. Being a chap of no great stature or frame, I took classes in Wing Chun Kung Fu for a couple of years and, whilst I have never used it for real, the confidence it has given me is immeasurable.

All that aside, I hope that Matt is recovering and that you and your family are moving towards a happier place.
